4 April 2008 – New resource ‘A short life in the sky, 1915-16’

Scottish Archives for Schools are pleased to announce their latest resource 'A short life in the sky, 1915-16', based on the letters of a young WW1 Scottish pilot.

When war broke out in 1914, aeroplanes were still a relatively new invention. John Douglas Hume, known as Douglas by his family and friends, left his home in Fife at the age of 18 to join the Royal Naval Air Service. He trained in England and saw action in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq) and Turkey.

He was a prolific letter writer. More…


     
20 December 2007 - Launch of A Union for a’ that DVD

On 13 December 2007, A Union for a’ that project launched their new multimedia resource for schools at the Scottish Parliament. The DVD looks at the Act of Union in 1707 and the history of Scottish government.

This new resource, aimed at upper primary and secondary school pupils, is the culmination of a collaborative education project for Scottish schools, funded by the Scottish Government, marking the 300th anniversary of the Union of the Parliaments in 1707.

At the launch John Mulgrew, Chairman of Learning and Teaching Scotland, said,

'There is a renewed appetite and enthusiasm for promoting and supporting all aspects of Scottish culture, arts, history and heritage. We have a responsibility - a duty even - to ensure that our young people are given the best possible opportunities to learn about, and from, their past and what has made our country today. This professional, systematic and innovative DVD does that and will be a huge success in our schools.' More ...
 

14 August 2007 - A Union for a’ that project update

A Union for a’ that is a collaborative education project for Scottish schools marking the 300th anniversary of the Union of the Parliaments in 1707. The project is funded by the Scottish Executive.

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, the National Archives of Scotland, Historic Scotland, the National Galleries of Scotland, the National Library of Scotland, the Scottish Parliament, and the Law Society of Scotland, with advice from Learning and Teaching Scotland, are together delivering learning resources exploring the historical significance of the Union and a programme of learning activities looking at both that history and the architectural expression of democratic decision-making, designed to support A Curriculum for Excellence. Look out for our collaborative education project for schools to mark the 300th anniversary of the Union of the Parliaments in 2007 -

The National Archives of Scotland, in partnership with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, Historic Scotland and others, is planning a series of events during 2007.

Join in the secondary schools’ annual Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament 2006-07, run by the Law Society, to debate motions relating to the theme of democracy. Primary school pupils can look forward to a history trail in Edinburgh and Aberdeen investigating how Scotland was governed over the centuries.

All participating partners will provide support materials on the historical significance of the Union and the architecture of democracy for primary and secondary schools in a free booklet and CD-ROM. Details of the programme of events and resources will be published and updated on a designated website. Watch this space for further news.
